Introduction:

Hi, my name is Jeff. I have been part of the svs dueling community since around 2005 in LOD. A lot has changed since then, specifically with the addition of the runeword Obsession, which is now meta for both the fire and light sorc in svs. I will note that this guide will only be covering vita cold sorc setups, as this is superior to an energy shield setup in svs.
The cold sorc has a different objective when building in sorc vs sorc, and that is to hit higher negative resistance compared to higher damage. Opponents can stack (and usually do) 450 cold resistance against a cold sorc. This means, at a minimum, you need -280 cold resistance if you want to “sunder” your opponent under max resistance. The focus of the builds are to get more points into cold mastery and use facets to accomplish this. If you have any questions, or comments regarding this guide, please let me know in the comments or via pm. I will cover optimal builds as well as budget builds and different options for skills.

_______________________________________________________________

These are the stats using my primary setup @ level 97 with vs fire setup on:

3,648 life
12,432 Blizzard Damage
8,214 Ice Blast Damage
60% Fhr
105% Fcr
-305 cold resist

Gear

All gear will be listed with perfect stats, clearly go with what you can afford/find. The top end 3cold skills/20fcr/3cold mastery/1-3 blizzard/2socket orbs are very expensive and hard to find, so we will talk about best in slot alternatives as well. Note: die facets are not allowed in svs, so you will want to get level facets.

Magic Orb Setups

Fire Setup
General: 10% max fire resist is allowed or 5% and dwarf star.

Weapon: 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/3Cold Mastery/Blizzard/2Socket (Facetx2) Magic Orb
• This is the most expensive part of the build, and the most difficult thing to find. At a minimum you want 3cold skills/3cold mastery/2socket. Here is a prioritized list in my opinion:
o Best in slot – 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/3Cold Mastery/3 Blizzard/2Socket
o Next best – 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/3Cold Mastery/1-2 Blizzard/2Socket
o Optimal – 3 Cold Skills/20Faster Cast Rate/3Cold Mastery/2Socket
o Cheaper option – 3 Cold Skills/3Cold Mastery/1-3 Blizzard/2Socket
o Budget – 3 Cold Skills/3Cold Mastery/2Socket
o Starter build – 3Cold Skills/3Cold Mastery/1Socket or 3Cold Skill/2Cold Mastery/2Socket
• Priority order is 6cold mastery (3cold skills/3cm) > 2socket > 20fcr > 1-3 blizzard
• You don’t want to buy a 2sorc orb or focus on +blizzard over cold mastery

Shield: Ethereal 35fcr Spirit Monarch
o You do not lose durability in svs dueling (except when clearing moor). Ethereal has 10 less strength requirement over non-eth, so you only need 146str to wear the ethereal spirit monarch over the normal 156str requirement.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life/2 Socket Circlet – Socketed 2x facet
• 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/2 Socket (facets) – use this if no fcr on orb

Amulet/Rings: Two options – 10fcr needed on one. I run with the ring fcr option because it allows for easier swaps. In general it is difficult to stack fire and light resist, for instance against a fire sorc with tstorm. My normal ring is fcr/high str/high life, but I also have swaps for fcr/high str/life/rep and fcr/high str/life/high fire/light resist if needed. The alternative, using a 3cold/10fcr ammy, will allow a second bk/soj ring for more damage/-resist, which can be useful if you have a lesser orb (or if you just want to run maximum damage).

• Option 1: Faster Cast Rate Ring – this is what I use
o 3 Cold Skills/100 Life ammy
o SOJ (or BK ring)
o Faster Cast Rate Ring with swaps (fire/light res, rep, etc)

• Option 2: Faster Cast Rate Ammy
o 3 Cold Skills/10 Faster Cast Rate
o 2x SOJS or BK Rings

Armor: Jeweler’s Armor of the Whale 100 Life – Socketed with 4x Facets
o Stick to light plate armors as they don’t slow down your faster run/walk. Dusk shroud, great hauberk, scarab husk, anything under 146 strength requirement

Weapon swap: Call to arms/eth spirit monarch

Gloves: Magefists

Belt: Arach

Boots: Infernostrides

Alternative setup – 86 Faster Hit Recovery:

I run 86fhr against a fire sorc – specifically a 105 fire or 200 fire that is very aggressive. This setup requires 20 fcr on your orb. If you do not have the fcr on orb, you could run a 20fcr ammy (with the one fcr ring) with bloodfists.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/2 Socket (Faceted)

Gloves: Bloodfists

Lightning Setup
General: Limit on +max light resist is 10, or tgods, or 20% wisp. Lo + wisp is not permitted. You will want to have at least 205 light resist to compensate for light sorc running griffons.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/2 Socket Circlet – Socketed 2x 5/5 Facet

Amulet: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life
o Alternative still 3 Cold Skill/10 Faster Cast Rate + 2 SOJ/BK rings

Weapon: Cold Orb + Eth Spirit 35 FCR
o Swap CTA + Eth spirit

Armor: Jeweler Armor of the Whale 100 Life – Socketed 4x 5/5 Level Facets

Gloves: Magefists

Belt: Tgods
o If no faster cast rate on orb, run arach + wisp

Rings: Faster Cast Rate Ring + SOJ or BK ring
o If no faster cast rate on orb, run wisp here over SOJ

Boots:
o 65 Life Waterwalks
o Life Rep Boots with Faster Hit Recovery and Light Resist – Faster Hit Recovery will save you from using a FHR small charm in inventory (gaining you 20 life)

Cold Setup
General: Max cold stack is 450 cold resist (hard cap, cannot exceed at all) or 400 + 1 piece of absorb (raven). 450cr is superior, get as close to this or even to 450 if possible.

Setup #1:

General: The best setup here, with all perfect cold resist can reach 466 cold resist. When buying gear, keep in mind that you can only lose 18 cold resist over all gear options, which becomes a small margin. The higher the cr on items (ring, amulet, boots, jewels, charms, etc), the better so you have room in other places. I will list the best option as a whole, then alternative options here. This is the most difficult part of the build. Do the math for your cold resist as you buy items here, the hardest part is the amulet, then ring/boots, then jewels.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life/2 Socket Circlet – 2x Cold Resist Jewels (40cr is max on each)
o See alternative under armor section

Amulet: You need 10fcr on the amulet or one ring here, do not need it in both slots.
o Option 1 – 10fcr on ring: 2 Sorc Skills (or 2 cold)/stats (str/life/rep etc)/50+cold resist (60cr max)
o Option 2 – No fcr on ring: 2 Sorc Skills (or 2 cold)/10fcr/stat/50++ cold resist

Rings: You need 10fcr on the amulet or one ring here, do not need it in both slots.
o Option 1 – No fcr on ammy: 10fcr/stats/high cold resist (41cr is max)
o Option 2 – 10fcr on ammy: stats/high cold resist

Weapon: Cold orb + Eth spirit
o Swap CTA + Eth spirit

Armor: Jeweler Armor of the Whale 100 Life – Socketed 4x 5/5 level facets
o Alternative: you can buy a second armor here and run 3x high cold resist jewels + 1x 5/5 facet. You can then wear your normal vs fire circlet with 2x facets and skip the high cr ring for a second soj/bk ring. This would be used with 10fcr on the amulet.

Gloves: Trangs

Belt: Arach

Boots:
o Life Rep boots with Cold Resist (40cr max) – 10 Faster Hit Recovery will save you from using a FHR small charm (gaining 20 life)
o 40frw/cold resist boots

Setup #2 – High Cold Resist Helmet

Helmet: 2 Sorc Skills (or cold skills)/30+ cold resist/2 socket circlet with 2x high cr jewels
o Allows you to drop 1x cold resist jewel/cold resist ring from previous setup

Setup #3 – Fathom/damage setup
General: If you cannot reach 450cr and -280 cold resist, due to budget, this is another option for you. These items are cheaper/easier to acquire, but they are not as good as the previous setups. There are many ways to make this setup. I suggest you build/plan out first and buy cold resist jewels last/as needed.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life/2 Socket Circlet – 2x Cold Resist Jewels (40cr is max)
o Nightwings with cold resist jewel
o 2 Sorc (or 2 cold)/20 Fcr/Cold Resist/1-2 Socket Circlet (will no longer need fcr on ring/ammy)

Amulet: 2 Sorc Skills/10fcr/stat/cold resist (60cr max)
o 3 Cold Skills/10fcr – very high cr needed on other gear to use this
o 3 Cold Skills/100 Life – to use with 1x fcr ring with cold resist

Rings: 2x Sojs or BK rings
o May use 10fcr/high stat/cold resist ring with 3 Cold/100Life ammy

Weapon: Fathom w/cold resist jewel + Eth spirit
o Swap CTA + Eth spirit

Armor: Ormus +3 blizz/15% cold damage with cold resist jewel

Gloves: Crafted 31-40 cold resist gloves (likely don’t need fcr here, and these can roll added bonuses)
o Trang gloves is the easier option, as long as higher cr isn’t needed

Belt: Arach

Boots:
o Life Rep boots with FHR and Cold Resist (40cr max)
o 40frw/cold resist boots

Alternative: Obsession Setups

Fire Setup

Weapon: Obsession 3 Cold Skills/3 Cold Mastery
o Bonus Skills – Teleport would save skill points for more damage. Blaze is also a great add
o Roll - +Life % ranges from 15-25% and All resist ranges from 60-70. You want 25% life on the roll.

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life/2 Socket Circlet – Socketed 2x facet

Amulet: 3 Cold Skills/100 Life

Armor: Jeweler’s Armor of the Whale 100 Life – Socketed with 4x Facets
o You don’t need any strength for this build, outside of what is needed for the armor. Gothic plate is lowest strength requirement, at 70, for a 4os armor and is generally cheaper. Dusk is next lowest at 77, and is a light plate armor, meaning it won’t slow down your faster run/walk. Keep in mind the lower the strength requirement of the armor, the more life you will have.

Weapon swap: Call to arms/splendor, lidless, sigons shield

Gloves: Magefists

Rings: 2x SOJ or BK Rings

Belt: Arach

Boots: Infernostrides

Lightning Setup

Weapon: Obsession

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/2 Socket Circlet – Socketed 2x facet

Amulet: 3 Cold Skills/Strength
o You need 100 strength for eth tgods and 110 for non-ethereal. If your armor strength requirement is lower than this, you need to make up for strength somewhere unless you plan to respect per match. Max strength for the ammy is 30, meaning even wearing gothic plate armor (70str req) can get you to 100 str for an eth tgods.

Rings: 2x SOJ or BK Rings

Armor: Jeweler’s Armor of the Whale 100 Life – Socketed with 4x Facets

Weapon swap: Call to arms/splendor, lidless, sigons shield

Gloves: Magefists

Belt: Eth tgods
o Eth tgods is 100 strength required, compared to non-eth being 110

Boots:
• 65 Life Waterwalks
• Life Rep boots with Light Resist

Cold Setup
General: There is a small amount of wiggle room with your cold resist and cold penetration (-cold res) here. You need 450 cold resist and -280 cold penetration. This setup, with perfect cold resist on all gear, can only hit 455 cold resist.

Weapon: Obsession (70 maximum resist)

Helm: 3 Cold Skills/20 Faster Cast Rate/2 Socket Circlet – Socketed 2x facet

Amulet: 2 Sorc Skills (or 2 Cold)/HIGH cold resist (60 maximum resist) – no fcr needed

Rings: 2x SOJ or BK Rings

Armor: Chains of Honor (COH)

Weapon swap: Call to arms/splendor, lidless, sigons shield

Gloves: Crafted cold resist gloves (40 maximum resist)

Belt: Arach

Boots:
o Life Rep boots with Cold Resist (40cr max)
o 30-40frw/cold resist boots

Inventory:

9x Cold Grand Charm with 45 to life

9x20Life/11Resist Small Charms (Fire/Light/Cold match dependent) – cannot use more than 10x at once

1x5Faster Hit Recovery/11 Resist Small Charm
o Except when using obsession setup, or when using boots with 10fhr

20/20 Torch

20/20 Anni

Stat Distribution:

Strength – 146 (for eth spirit), or enough to wear armor if obsession build

Dexterity – Base

Vitality - All the rest

Energy - Base

Skill Distribution:
There are three ways to run the skills. You will not be able to max cold mastery, blizz damage and ice blast damage all at once. Some focus on pure blizz damage, others focus on high ib (ice blast damage), and others run a middle ground. I run in the middle, but I will provide all three.

• Cold Mastery - 20

• Blizzard - 20

• Ice Blast - 20

• Ice Bolt - 20

• Teleport – 1

• Glacial Spike – higher blizz damage. Max if going pure blizz, rest of points here if pure ib, or split between this and frozen orb if running a middle ground setup.

• Frozen Orb – higher ice blast damage. Max if running pure ib damage, rest of points here if pure blizz, or split between this and glacial if running a middle ground setup.

• Optional: 1 point blaze

Conclusion
Thank you for taking the time to read over this build. If you have any more specific questions about the build or are interested in SVS, feel free to reach out to me. If there are any other options you want to test out, let me know. If it is something I haven’t already tested, I would be glad to test it out. Special thanks to Gemmd for most of this knowledge and helping test out the best builds. Thank you to J33P for figuring out the viable obsession setup with cold vs cold option.
