I Played Diablo 2 For the First Time Is It Still The GOAT?
I Played Diablo 2 For the First Time Is It Still The GOAT?Nov 28 2025
miiko7859: Title is insulting to our intelligence. Ofcorse its not overrated its the best game in the world.
erick3755: I will say it is one of the few games that I continue to come back to and enjoy putting hours into. It is hard to pinpoint how much love is based on nastalgia vs just being a fantastic game (because it does have faults). i have found a few games I enjoy more for the first playthrough, but nothing that holds up after an extended number of hours. Just my 2 cents though.
bojcio: D2 strikes the perfect balance between simplicity, complexity and immersion. It has just enough systems to keep progression interesting and diverse without feeling overbearing and tedious. All of its mechanics still seem immersive and realistic. A lot of ARPGs have arbitrary mechanics that make absolutely no sense. Why is my spell power as a mage tied to the damage of a sword I'm holding in my hand? And why do I keep combining, stacking and leveling things ad nauseam? I don't know. Just empty busywork. D2 gets things just right. Its perfect.
andrewvader1955: I feel sorry for anyone jumping into his franchise who played Diablo 3 in Diablo 4. Because they are not the same company and they're only trying to relive the greatness from other studios. Play listen to this day is pretty hollowed out. Like I will only play Diablo 1 or Diablo 2 I bought devil 3 but it became a pretty big let down. Thankfully EA hired vicarious visions to make Diablo to resurrected and they did a phenomenal job in keeping the assets and upgrading so that the game can get more life another 20 more years
scottasin: TBH, this is a ... poorly constructed review. However, thats understandable given the fact that you've yet to fully understand the games mechanics. It is definitely interesting to hear the perspective of someone who's played 3 and 4 first... but to base your opinion on the first 2 acts of normal difficulty is like judging a book by its cover... And really its like judging a book by its cover after having seen the cartoon sequel thats loosely adapted from the plot of the original book.
D2 has a degree of depth that isn't immediately obvious, and it also doesn't have any 'tutorial' like aspects. When it was released, it was assumed you'd read the instruction manual ir reference it as you play through. The game itself just throws you out into the wild.
I've got two/three suggestions to give a try to allow yourself to begin to understand the depth of the game. 1. Either play single player so you can adjust difficulty/drop rates and unlock more skills sooner (as well as having static maps that don't reset each time you exit the game), or play online with other people so you can see how different classes work together. 2. Try to beat all three difficulties. So many of the games mechanics just don't really do anything noticeable through Normal. Its around Act 3 in Nightmare difficulty that the game starts to get noticeably tougher, and you really have to start thinking about optimizing your build and hunting for items that support your chosen class and skill build. Most builds can breeze through Normal, and even unfocused and poorly constructed builds can brute force their way to beating Baal in Normal.
Going in blind is great, figuring things out as you go is great, avoiding build guides that make the game unreasonably easy through the early stages is great, I wish more people took that approach when starting. BUT, its not really a full representation of the actual experience of what the game is about. Keep pushing, when you hit a wall, try to figure out just what that wall is, take a look at your skills, stat placement and gear, and then try to figure out what you need to do the break through that wall. (FTR, Summon Necros are one of the safest builds in the game, but they struggle against bosses in general, and slow down significantly with overall damage output agter a while. It'll be easy to not die, but it'll be tough to kill quickly. On the flip side of thay coin, Sorceresses can put out insane amounts of damage, but can start getting one shotted pretty early. Amazons (with the right skills and stats), Druids, and Assassins sort of sit in the middle with big life pools and crowd control skills, but also deal solid damage)
Keep playing, keep learning, there is SO MUCH more to this game than 2 acts with one class. You have barely even seen the surface, let alone started digging in to deeper levels. Have fun!
regntonne: Aragorn: You have my sword...
Legolas: And my bow.
Gimli: And my axe!
Colin the Necromancer: And your dead brother!
The_Reel_Tech: It has been around the same amount of time for me, started playing again earlier this year and I am SO HOOKED it is ridiculous ! So to answer your question, Yes, Yes It Is !
scotty562: Wow the music transitions are WAY too loud. Holy wow. Love the video otherwise.
tjmoon1857: The Necromancer Collin
Mcbuggler: Theres 2 games that I always come back to sooner or later, and I imagine I will most likely keep coming back to them until the end of my days. Those 2 games are Diablo 2 and Vanilla World of Warcraft. I get these strong urges to play these games after awhile, almost like a drug. it's honestly really quite strange, it has to be some nostalgia from playing these while I was still a kid. Diablo 2 if I'm being completely honest doesn't even really have much of an end game. I just make my own end game content like trying different builds and challenges. I've played D2 so much, that the game feels incredibly easy to me now, even on hardcore, but I still love it.
andrewstewart01: Vendors are good for bases, and sometimes they can sell great gear for very specific purposes. Dropped gear is usually better.
mbrstrmn: D2 was the GOAT I was obsessed at the time but after playing the remaster, I realized the skill system is too one dimensional. You essentially spec into one skill and press one button the entire game. I played through once for nostalgia but got bored quickly. D4 had a rough start but has improved since launch. I've learned to appreciate the deeper complexity of D4 over the OG
WaaS-Labs: not a huge d2 fan. its too clunky. the newest version was not an improvement. but then again d4 was pretty bad as well. i think d3 is still my favorite of them all though you cant beat the nostolgia of d1. d1 can just stay the way it is and ill still go back and beat it from time to time.
logankerlee: Very solid video! I first played Diablo as a young kid, many years before Diablo 2 was a thought. I loved it! Now, you didn't play the original first - that's totally okay! I'd of began with this because Diablo 2's my favorite but hey that's me. I've never really enjoyed the more recent Diablo games. Both 3 and 4 were mighty weak in comparison I feel with the much lighter tone and lowered difficulty/challenge when playing them.
I'm very much looking forward to watching you progress further through this game! :) Playing as a Necromancer never was my favorite class and definitely wouldn't be the one that I'd play through with first - Paladin was MUCH more my style. No matter, you're doing great with this class! I also never enjoyed playing this on console. I grew up playing this so that means that I of course am a PC gamer. It just feels wrong to play this on console for me! But hey - if you dig on it, keep on doing what you're doing.
Acts 3 - 5 are cool as well but yeah, those first two are many people's faves. I personally love the final two acts most. Reason being is likely because of the increase in power (much higher levels) as well as the end boss fights! They're so intense - you'll have a great time, I promise! :D
Pass-Timekiller: Best advice I have is focus on survivalability in the later game. On normal difficulty you can easily tank just about everything but in nightmare and hell difficulty you restitances and defense take a huge hit and everything kills you fast. Boost resitance and defense
kawmic7: YES!!
zachb8012: Project Diablo 2 Season 12 releases on November 28th. PD2 is a free mod with a huge community which adds elements of the PoE endgame to the Lord of Destruction version of the game. This includes aspects of crafting, as well as new skills, bosses, rune words, items, skill balancing, mechanics, a fantastic trade site, and mapping - all painstakingly cohesive with the design vision of the original game. I love ARPGs and PD2 is my favorite, and by far the best time I've had playing any
pokeholicmaster: If you don't like the random maps every time you load a new instance, play offline. Maps are static in offline mode
TheSunMoon: One of the games that other games of the same genre will simply be called "Diablo-clone". Same like "GTA-clone" and "Can your PC run Crysis"
g4manhere553: There are a lot of games that are simultaneously overrated and some of the best games of all time. Games where, if you’ve been hyped to hell and back, you might not enjoy them as much as you otherwise would. Peak, but still made by mere mortals and thus they have their flaws. Final Fantasy 7 is a good example. I’d be willing to accept Diablo 2 being declared that kind of overrated, but maybe not. This era of Blizzard was a bunch of multi genre video game gods.
Onizuka1124: I expected a gameplay and reaction but found this hilarious video. I laugh so hard watching this lol. He died so many times in act 1 and he put the cube to stash/storage what a noob move plus he plays necro using the weakest skill he can use bone spear but he chooses teeth! Also uses skeletons!
Labersak: If u play Diablo II, play the Real one PD2 -Projekt Diablo II
steveaugust7797: Oh man that first cinematic just made the memories come flooding back
leejordan001: Remember my first playthrough also picking a necro. I put 1 point on every curse used 2 skelies and went slashing with a sword like a barbarian. Of corse at the 2. Act I couldnt go forward anymore. My character was as weak as a newborn. I was 12 and couldnt understand a word in english… quite a few years passed when I could properly go through the game and clearing hell difficoulty. I still play it regularly. My fav game ever. I enjoy every playthrouh, somehow cant be boring. Every character build is different. I especially like uncommon builds like archer paladin.
Corvoreviews: one note: the voice acting that you hear is the original voice acting, and I have to say that this is one of the goats to me
